Michele Smith
is a multifaceted performer. She plays
flute, alto flute, and bass flute.
She has a lovely voice and sings in several languages.
Ms. Smith has a performance degree from Kent State University and a Masters in Musicology from
Brooklyn College. She continued her classical flute
training with Robert Langevin, principal flute, New York Philharmonic and Gerardo
Levy, former principal flute, New York City Opera.
Her love of jazz led her to work with wonderful teachers like Barry Harris, Mauricio Smith, Richard
Davis, Roland Hannah, and many others.
For several years she was a member of Rolando Briceos Salsa ensemble at Boys
Harbor. She produces her own jazz and
classical ensembles, she is a member of
the NY Jazz Flutet and Art Lillards Heavenly
Jazz Band; an instrumentalist for the Vox Novus new composers forum, and
freelances with other groups in New York City.
Her social activism is channeled into the
Reverend Billy Church of Stop-Shopping Gospel Choir ,
as an instrumentalist and the alto section leader.
The choir has toured throughout the US and London. More traditional theater projects
include: DadaNewYork Cabaret Re: Voltaire
with new music for Cocteaus "The Wedding Breakfast"
by Julie Harting; and America America an Italian play produced by Teatromania
with original score by Domenico Capotorto.
A great ensemble player and well regarded among her peers,
New York audiences have been enjoying her performances for the past ten years.
